People who speak different languages like Spanish, English,
etc. or speak different forms of the same language are definitely discriminated
against. People all over the world are expected to speak that country’s or
place’s language and if they don’t they are judged as being too lazy for not
learning the language or speaking that certain language in a specific way. As I
wrote, in other countries people judge others for not speaking the same
language in a specific way; in America for example, we judge other Americans
who speak a different form of English like when people speak Ebonics (forgive
me for using that word) even though as Jamila Lyiscott,”even the most articulate
Americans sound foolish to the British. Gloria Anzaldua made a great point when
she wrote how she was punished during school when she was younger for speaking Spanish
and she had to take speech classes to get rid of her accent. I know from
personal experience that all of this is true, I grew up as a Latino-American
and being taught that here in America I can only speak Spanish at home and I can
only speak “American English.” America is supposed to be the melting pot of the
world, so people should be open to other languages or other forms of English.
