Representative Description & History
Sanctuary is an organization
committed in furnishing Safe houses across the United States for domestic violence
victims. Our Headquarter is located in
Long beach CA, established in December 1965. Our commitment is to offer housing,
counseling, medical, psychiatric, attorneys assistance and transportation to
all individuals needing our help. Born from
domestic violence our founder established the first safe house in 1965 she then
assisted her neighbor, mother of three left beaten in the streets of long beach
with three children at her side. Bringing her in to her home she began a path
of no return. With the first mother she brought in to the next and so on. Recruiting
first her family members then volunteers in the community. She soon began the
sanctuary organization. This organization grew under her leadership; the number
of safe houses grew to 36 across the United States. Working with
state and federal government, law firms and small business she has been able to
attain grants and loans to provide basic needs to all victims.
Social Issue
Background
In California, its crime for anyone
to threaten, beat, sexually assault or harm another person, even if they are
married. Domestic violence is not only a crime against women, but they are the
majority affected. One in every two families in the United States has seen
domestic violence in one time or another. Domestic violence is a repetitive
pattern in people’s lives. Victims and witnesses of domestic violence in
childhood are mostly likely to repeat such acts as adults. The current culture
of domestic violence cannot be tolerated. Too many women are beaten and killed.
Too many children are abused or killed. Too many mothers and children are made
homeless. There is a way out! Victims do not need to submit and lead a life of
tension between calm and storm. There should
be somewhere these victims can go for sanctuary.
