Roxanne & Victims of Modern-Day Slavery

Part One:
Song: Roxanne
Artist: The Police
Genre: Altern. Rock

“Roxanne”, is a prostitute. The song talks about the lead singer, Sting,  being in love with her and that he wants her to change her ways. He tells her that she doesn’t have to “wear that dress tonight, walk the streets for money.” She doesn’t “have to put on the red light,” meaning she doesn’t have to put herself on the market anymore.

Sting said “Roxanne” was a serious song about a real relationship. He talks about how he would treat her right, leading to think that she wasn’t treated right when she was a prostitute.

The photograph shows a living situation from an abandoned slave-labor camp. The slave-labor camp held Mexican migrants, forcing them to work in vegetable and citrus fields. They earned $20 a week, for working almost an entire week over 10 hours a day. At the end of a long day, they get to sleep on a single mattress along with others in one room.

Part  2:
Song
Sting, the lead signer of “The Police”, discusses my social issue because he had a personal experience with a prostitute. He fell in love, and he wanted her to change her ways, get away from her old life. He noticed she wasn’t treated right, which is why he promised that he will.

The Police is a famous rock band. When they got interviewed for this song Sting said, "I felt very strongly about 'Roxanne' because that was a serious song about a real relationship. There was no talk about f------ in it, it wasn't a smutty song in any sense of the word. It was real song with a real, felt, lyric and they wouldn't play it, on the grounds that it was about a prostitute. But write a silly song about f------, that hasn't got the word 'f------' in it and you've got a hit. It gets a bit depressing.", it makes it seem believable that he wrote the song with emotion and feelings.

Jon is committed to his work. For 10 years he documented gun violence in Chicago, and experienced of undocumented immigrants. He states that his subjects are “people who have been left behind by the global market or are being used by the global market.” Jon wants to the issue of human trafficking and engage people on a personal and emotional level, which is why I think he is a credible source.

Jon met some people that were victims of modern-day slavery that led him to the abandoned slave-labor camp. He thought it was important to show where people are put and what they look like.
