Needle and the Damage
Done is a song by Neil Young that describes the destruction caused by heroin
addiction of musicians he knew. Thought the song is not describing him it
refers to his former band mate and friend Danny Whitten. Neil Young also refers
to the song relating a roadie who died because of heroin addiction during his
music tour.
The lyrics are referring to Danny on how he became addicted
to heroin. Through his addiction he lost his part in the band. Also how heroin
has taken another man’s life and the damage that has done.
Part 2
Neil Young is singing about this social issue because he lost
a friend and former band mate Danny Whitten to heroin addiction. Neil Young is a
Canadian musician that has been active since the 1960’s. During his music
career Neil Young experience and saw many musicians who became drug addicts and
lost their lives and careers because of their drug addictions. In 1972 Neil
Young friend Danny Whitten lost his life because of his drug addiction. Neil
Young became involved by producing and writing Needle and the Damage Done to
reach out to people about the heroin addiction and the problems that causes.
This song was recorded at Royce Hall, UCLA in January 30, 1971 and released February
1, 1972. The song is written and produce by Neil Young.
