Break Free
The form of representation I chose for my social issue
on gender inequality is the song/video called Break Free by Ruby Rose. The
video itself embodies the need to educate people in regards to gender roles and
inequality between both men and women.
The video itself is based on ones transformation from
a young beautiful to a person who is female to someone who does not feel
comfortable with the role they play. In the video the girl places herself in
the show and grabs a trash can, fills it with water and washes of the makeup
that hides her tattoos and true person. She even cuts off her hair to the thumping
beats of the piano.
The song has intense lyrics that speak about many social
issues presented from homosexuality to gender roles and what role one must
play. The lyrics speak about running away due to being different and wondering
if you have the right to stay. “Running from the savagely unkind,” this lyric
itself tells the story behind the lyrics with just one line.
I found an article of Ruby Rose where she talks about
her motive for making this video; she tied this video towards her discomfort to
having to be something that she never felt like being. She was expected to act
a certain but she refused because she felt unhappy with herself. She chose to
speak in regards to the mater because she felt like there was a possibility that
others felt like her and she wanted to be the voice that spoke to people and
told them that they didn’t have to be anything they didn’t want to be. We
should consider listenin to her because she was in that position and chose to
break free.
